BeeSpeaker

During BeeSpeaker’s pre-release phase, I worked on a product designed to change how people learn new languages by focusing on speaking and listening, rather than memorization and grammar drills. The idea was to replicate how children naturally learn language, by hearing real speech and responding to it, inside a mobile app.

From Market Insight to Product Vision

When I joined the team, I saw both a strong business opportunity and clear challenges in product design and process. The market was crowded with language-learning apps, but most of them relied on static exercises that did little to help users actually speak.

Through discovery and early research, we found that private tutoring was still the most effective way people learned languages, because it was conversational, interactive, and responsive. That insight became the foundation of BeeSpeaker: to bring the experience of a private tutor into a mobile product using voice recognition and real-time interaction.

Defining a New Kind of Language App

Our goal was to build something fundamentally different from existing apps. BeeSpeaker was meant to go beyond flashcards and grammar drills by allowing users to hear natural speech, speak back, and receive immediate feedback.

We wanted the experience to feel human and engaging, not mechanical.

Research That Shaped the Experience

Research played a central role in shaping the product. We spoke with language tutors, gathered feedback from people trying to learn languages on mobile, and analyzed app-store reviews from competitors. These sources showed us where users struggled, what frustrated them, and what was missing from existing solutions.

Those insights directly informed both the product direction and the way we designed the learning experience.

Designing from Zero: Flows, Personality, and Brand

Designing BeeSpeaker meant starting from a blank slate. We iterated repeatedly on the core flows, interaction patterns, and visual language to make the experience intuitive and supportive. One of the ideas that emerged early was the need for a friendly guide inside the app.

This led to the creation of the Bee mascot, which became both a learning companion and a recognizable part of the BeeSpeaker brand across the app and its marketing.

Validating the Product with Real Users

Before moving into full development, we invested heavily in testing and validation. BeeSpeaker was meant for a wide audience, from children to seniors, so accessibility and clarity were essential. We ran feedback sessions, conducted interviews, and observed live usage to understand where people struggled.

These cycles led to continuous refinement, from adjusting colors to be softer and more accessible, to reworking navigation and learning flows that proved confusing in practice.

From Continuous Iteration to Market Launch

After nearly two years of research, design, and development, BeeSpeaker launched as a complete language-learning experience that balanced business goals with real user needs. The final product reflected countless iterations and a deep focus on how people actually learn when they speak and listen, not just read and tap.

What This Project Taught Me About Building Real Products

Working on BeeSpeaker taught me how essential clear processes and strong collaboration are in long-term product development. Without shared structure and communication, even good ideas lose direction. The team treated me as a design partner rather than a pixel pusher, which allowed me to shape not just the interface but the product itself.

Drawing on my experience across different product types, I helped establish best practices in research, design, and iteration that ensured BeeSpeaker was built with both quality and long-term value in mind.
